At The Sun release their stripped back cover of Rag ‘N’ Bone Man’s ‘Human’. Rooted in funk, soul and blues, Rag ‘N’ Bone man produced a stunning, passionate track to hit the mainstream charts which caught the attention of millions.
At The Sun took on the challenge of covering this moving track and what a fantastic job they have done. The visual aspect of the video is simple with the colours being monochrome producing a vintage wash and the direction focuses on each instruments entrance starting off with the deep, thick bass line and the soulful vocals layering on top before panning to the stuttering of the alternate picking from the rhythm guitar. The minimal approach At The Sun have taken to producing the video not only nod at the video produced by Rag ‘N’ Bone Man himself for this track, but it allows the listener to focus on the lyrical and instrumental content of the song and feel the emotion put across by the band.

What inspired you as a band to release a cover?
Originally we just wanted to add something to the live set to keep things fresh for our fans. A lot of our new material is in demo form at the moment in preperation for the next record so a cover seemed the best way to keep the live show interesting. We never actually planned to record it, but the reception live was so good that we thought we had to get it down on tape!
Why did you choose Rag ‘N’ Bone Man’s ‘Human’?
‘Human’ is such a powerful song and has a very old school blues/roots vibe to it, something all of us in the band are drawn to. We didn’t want to just cover another rock band’s song, we wanted to take something and make it our own – put the At The Sun stamp on it. We talked about a few other songs we could cover but when ‘Human’ was mentioned we all knew immediately that we could do something special with it.
What was the most enjoyable aspect of producing this cover?
The first time we played through the full arrangement in rehearsal. Rough arrangement ideas had been shared online with each other and built upon, but it was only when we stepped into the rehearsal room and played it through with each other that it really came to life. There were a lot of smiles around the room – always a good sign!
